If you are looking for a simple, straight forward book for conducting an action oriented research in an educational setting than Craig\u27s 2009 Action Research Essentials is for you. This book provides the “essentials” for this type of research . She provide s clear and concise information assisting students that may be using this approach for the first time. Good examples are given for the novice of action oriented research. The author presents the information in an orderly fashion. In this review, I will give my initial appraisal and content analysis regarding the intended audience, objectivity of the author and the writing style presente

Seeking, Reading, and Use of Scholarly Articles: An International Study of Perceptions and Behavior of Researchers.

    Get PDF
While journal articles are still considered the most important sources of scholarly reading, libraries may no longer have a monopoly on providing discovery and access. Many other sources of scholarly information are available to readers. This international study examines how researchers discover, read, and use scholarly literature for their work. Respondents in 2018 report an average of almost 20 article readings a month and there are still significant differences found in the reading and use of scholarly literature by discipline and geographical location, consistent with the earlier studies. Researchers show they are willing to change or adopt new strategies to discover and obtain articles

Shoreline armor removal: challenges and solutions to working with private property owners

    Get PDF
Shoreline armoring is a pressure on the nearshore ecosystem altering a variety of sediment and biological processes which in turn alter the structure and function of the nearshore ecosystem. It is also a subject that elicits an emotional response from landowners concerned about the stability of their shoreline property in the face of sea level rise and increasing storm surge. The Northwest Straits Foundation and its partners have been engaging with shoreline landowners to encourage behavior change through education, outreach, and incentives that remove or reduce the barriers for consideration of alternatives to hard armor. This presentation will highlight the tools and methods used to identify landowners willing to consider alternatives to hard armor and the incentives that got them to say yes to removal. It will also discuss the challenges, obstacles, and compromises made throughout the process

Report of the Topical Group on Neutrino Properties for Snowmass 2021

Neutrinos are the most elusive among the known elementary particles, because of their feeble interactions with ordinary matter. They are also the most mysterious, because of their tiny masses that suggest a novel mass generating mechanism, their unknown Dirac or Majorana nature, and their big quantum mixing leading to large-amplitude flavor oscillations. This Topical Group focuses on neutrino properties that are not directly investigated in other Topical Groups of the Neutrino Frontier: in particular, the absolute value of the neutrino masses, the Dirac or Majorana nature of neutrinos, their electromagnetic properties, their lifetime, and hypothetical exotic properties.Comment: Topical Group Report for NF05 (Neutrino Frontier Topical Group on Neutrino Properties) for Snowmass 2021. 51 pages excluding reference

Treatment patterns and clinical outcomes in elderly patients with HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer from the registHER observational study.

Limited data exist regarding treatment patterns and outcomes in elderly patients with HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer (MBC). registHER is an observational study of patients (N = 1,001) with HER2-positive MBC diagnosed within 6 months of enrollment and followed until death, disenrollment, or June 2009 (median follow-up 27 months). Outcomes were analyzed by age at MBC diagnosis: younger (<65 years), older (65-74 years), elderly (≥75 years). For progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) analyses of first-line trastuzumab versus nontrastuzumab, older and elderly patients were combined. Cox regression analyses were adjusted for baseline characteristics and treatments. Estrogen receptor/progesterone receptor status was similar across age groups. Underlying cardiovascular disease was most common in elderly patients. In patients receiving trastuzumab-based first-line treatment, elderly patients were less likely to receive chemotherapy. In trastuzumab-treated patients, incidence of left ventricular dysfunction (LVD) and congestive heart failure (CHF) (grades ≥ 3) were highest in elderly patients (LVD: elderly 4.8 %, younger 2.8 %, older 1.5 %; CHF: elderly 3.2 %, younger 1.9 %, older 1.5 %). Unadjusted median PFS (months) was significantly higher in patients treated with first-line trastuzumab than those who were not (<65 years: 11.0 vs. 3.4, respectively; ≥65 years: 11.7 vs. 4.8, respectively). In patients <65 years, unadjusted median OS (months) was significantly higher in trastuzumab-treated patients; in patients ≥65 years, median OS was similar (<65 years: 40.4 vs. 25.9; ≥65 years: 31.2 vs. 28.5). In multivariate analyses, first-line trastuzumab use was associated with significant improvement in PFS across age. For OS, significant improvement was observed for patients <65 years and nonsignificant improvement for patients ≥65 years. Elderly patients with HER2-positive MBC had higher rates of underlying cardiovascular disease than their younger counterparts and received less aggressive treatment, including less first-line trastuzumab. These real-world data suggest improved PFS across all age groups and similar trends for OS

Targeting the Texas Citizen Participation Act: The 2019 Texas Legislature\u27s Amendments to a Most Consequential Law

    Get PDF
Few Texas laws enacted in recent decades have had a greater impact on civil litigation or been more litigated than the Texas Citizen’s Participation Act (“TCPA”) passed in 2011. Despite its stated purpose of protecting First Amendment rights, as written, the TCPA’s seemingly limitless application confounded judges and litigants alike, causing the 86th Legislature in 2019 to pass sweeping changes to that law. The Article describes the original statute’s problematic nature, the caselaw interpreting it, and the recent changes’ legislative history and substance. The authors highlight contributions of key legislators and stakeholders. The Article’s extensive treatment of changes to key definitions, such as “right of association,” “legal action,” and “matter of public concern,” demonstrates how the new law reigned in the TCPA, with the notable exception of its application to media defendants, and its far-reaching implications for advocates and their clients. The Article also addresses new exemptions added by the legislation, exemptions retained from the old law, and new procedures for resolving cases under the statute. The authors argue the Legislature’s extensive amendments bring the TCPA more into line with established First Amendment jurisprudence and traditional procedures for pre-trial case resolution and provides suggestions for practitioners to access what for many may be unfamiliar areas of the law
